He is originally from Barbados, but has also lived in the United Kingdom, Trinidad, the United States, Canada and, of course, Jamaica. At the end of high school he won a scholarship to attend Harvard University to pursue an undergraduate degree in biology. He attended medical school at UWI, Mona campus. He specialized in Anaesthesia and critical care at the UWI. He received further training in Anaesthesia for cardiac surgery, Anaesthesia for transplantation and critical care at the University of Toronto. He returned to the UHWI/UWI in 2011. Dr. Toppin has a special interest in Critical care education. He is currently a consultant in anaesthesia and intensive care at the UHWI and an Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at UWI.
